What it involves
A lawn mown regularly thickens up and leaves less room for weeds. A lawn left too long becomes a meadow: it is harder to cut, the flattened grass recovers badly, and the result stays patchy for several weeks.
Josué mows, takes the edges and tree bases back with a strimmer, collects and removes. Cutting height follows the season: short in spring when growth is fast, higher in summer to shade the soil against drought.

When to do it
March to October. In peak growth, a visit every two weeks keeps a lawn tidy. In July and August visits are spaced out and the cutting height raised.

The four figures that decide the state of your lawn
A Mediterranean lawn is not mown like a Normandy one. These are the markers that separate a lawn that survives the summer from one that burns off in a week.

- The cutting height in JulyAgainst four to five in spring. Tall grass shades its own soil and holds moisture: it is the only protection a lawn has once you stop watering it. Cutting short in high heat burns it off in days, and it takes weeks to come back.

- The most to take off in one passRemoving more than a third of the height at once stresses the plant and lets moss in. It is the rule that explains why two close visits beat one late visit after three weeks away.

- The rhythm at peak growthFrom May to June, then again in September after the storm rains. Between the two, in July and August, the lawn goes dormant and visits naturally space out — paying for a weekly mow in August makes no sense here.

- What is checked before every visitThe permitted hours for noisy machinery, set by your commune’s municipal order — that is the only text that applies where you live, and the mairie issues it. And any watering restrictions in force, which decide between mulching and collecting.
Lawn mowing: the mistakes we see most
Three situations that come back job after job. None is beyond repair, but all cost more to fix than to avoid.
Cutting at the same height all year
The right spring height is the worst summer height. In April a short cut thickens the sward; in July the same cut burns it within three days and hands the space to weeds, which do cope with drought. The height goes up as soon as the nights stop being cool, and back down in September.
Letting three weeks go by in peak growth
The one-third rule is not gardener’s folklore: take more than a third of the height in one go and the grass goes into shock, yellows, and takes a fortnight to recover. In April and May a watered lawn passes that threshold in fifteen days. Two short visits cost less than one rescue, and the result is not comparable.
Mowing a soaked lawn
The wheels rut the ground, flattened grass passes under the blade uncut, and the deck clogs badly enough to drop clumps that scorch the sward underneath. On heavy soil it is better to wait a day: the cut will be cleaner and the ground will not keep the ruts until summer.

The area, the frequency, obstacles to work around, the slope, and the volume of clippings to remove.
How it is priced
Per square metre, with a floor: coming out for two hundred square metres costs nearly as much as for five hundred. That is why a small area is best slotted into an existing round.
What the market charges
Comparison sites quote figures in the order of tens of cents per square metre, falling with area, or a few tens of euros an hour. On a private lawn, frequency weighs more than the unit price: fifteen short visits cost less than six rescues.
These figures are taken from national comparison sites. They are not PJ Espaces Verts’ rates: Josué prices after seeing the job, and his quote may fall outside these ranges either way. They are here so you are not calling in the dark.
What a quote is made of
- The area cut
- Measured on site. The price per square metre falls as the area rises: setting up takes the same time either way.
- Obstacles
- Standalone trees, beds, furniture, trampolines. They cost nothing in mowing and everything in edging: each one is a strimmer circuit.
- Slope
- Past a certain angle a ride-on will not go. It is back to a pedestrian mower, and the time doubles.
- Collection
- Collect and remove, or mulch on site. In peak growth, the clippings off a large lawn fill a trailer.
- Frequency
- One isolated cut through long grass costs more than a regular cut through short grass, over the same area.

The 50% tax credit: what to know
Small gardening jobs at a private home fall under France’s personal services scheme: half the cost comes back to the householder as a tax credit, up to an annual ceiling per household, and an immediate-advance option means paying only half the invoice at the time. The catch is that the work has to fall inside that category — and many websites claim it for work that does not.
This service does qualify: mowing, hedge trimming, brush clearing and routine garden upkeep are explicitly covered, including removal of the waste the job generates.
The tax credit requires a business registered under the personal services scheme. Ask Josué where that registration stands when he quotes: it changes what the work finally costs you, and he will tell you straight.
Lawn mowing: your questions
How many cuts does a season take?
In the Rhône valley, count fifteen to twenty passes between March and October, depending on watering. In peak growth — April, May, September — a cut every fortnight keeps a lawn tidy. In July and August the grass slows or stops altogether, and the visits space out.
How high should grass be cut in summer?
Higher than in spring, which surprises people. Longer grass shades its own soil, keeps it cool and slows evaporation; cut short in real heat, a lawn yellows within days and takes weeks to recover. Josué raises the cutting height as soon as the dry spell settles in.
Should the clippings be collected or left on the lawn?
There is a case for both. Collecting gives a clean result straight away and avoids thatch build-up; leaving finely chopped clippings — mulching — returns nitrogen and protects the soil in summer, but does not work if the grass has grown a lot between visits. By default Josué collects and removes; say so if you prefer the other way.
When am I allowed to mow? What about Sundays?
Noise hours for garden machinery are set by municipal or prefectural order, and they vary from one commune to the next. The usual pattern allows mowing on weekdays from mid-morning to early evening, with shorter windows on Saturday and a narrow one on Sunday morning. Your town hall holds the text that applies to you; Josué works within it.
My lawn has turned into a meadow — mowing or clearing?
Past about thirty centimetres a mower stops coping: it clogs, flattens the grass and leaves an uneven finish for weeks. At that point we take the height down with a brushcutter first, and mowing resumes its proper role from the next visit. Josué will say so at the quote visit — it changes the price.
Will you come out for a small plot?
Yes, and it is easier still if you are somewhere Josué already passes — Lapalud, Bollène, Mondragon, Mornas or Pierrelatte. A small area slots into an existing round. On an isolated plot the travel weighs more heavily in the quote, which is worth knowing in advance.
