Getting to Pont-Saint-Esprit from Lapalud
Ten minutes west, across the Rhône. It is the only Gard anchor in the area, and Josué already has several regular clients here — mostly garden maintenance and hedge trimming. The bridge is the only crossing: that, rather than the distance, is what sets the journey time, and the distance is among the shortest in the area.
The gardens here, and what they involve
A dense old centre, with walled town gardens and access measured in gate widths, and a more open periphery where plots widen towards the garrigue. The two do not pose the same problems: in town everything is carried out by hand and the volume of waste decides the quote; on the edge, it is scrub coming back that comes up most often.
Statutory clearance: what applies here
Pont-Saint-Esprit falls under the Gard prefectural order on statutory clearance, which applies in every commune of the department — a clear difference from the Vaucluse, where the scope is defined massif by massif. The baseline depth stays at 50 metres around buildings, extendable to 100 metres by decision of the mayor or the prefect in the most exposed areas.

The dominant species, and what they demand
This is where the garrigue begins: kermes oak, broom, rosemary and holm oak regrowth take over within two years of a plot being left. In the gardens, laurustinus, pittosporum and Provençal cypress, with olives more common than on the left bank. Clearing here is less maintenance than a reset, and it has to be redone every two or three years if nobody comes back in between.
Crossing the bridge: what changes between Lapalud and Pont-Saint-Esprit
Six kilometres, one bridge, and everything changes: the department, the soil, the species, even the tip the branches go to. It is the best-documented crossing in the area, and the one nobody writes about.
Which department is in charge here?
The Gard, not the Vaucluse. It is the Gard prefectural order that sets brush clearance, and the mairie of Pont-Saint-Esprit that enforces it. The Vaucluse rules your neighbour across the water will quote do not apply to you.
What changes underfoot?
You leave the alluvial plain for limestone slopes. The commune rises from around forty metres at the river to close to two hundred on the heights: the slopes are short but real, and stony ground changes how roots hold.
And the trees?
Holm oak dominant, Aleppo pine, downy oak, juniper. Hard woods and a highly flammable conifer — nothing like the planes and poplars of the riverbank, in cutting technique or in volume to move.
Does the old centre change anything?
A great deal. The historic centre is a designated heritage site with its own planning document that replaces the local plan. Felling there does not follow the same rules as elsewhere in the commune: the mairie decides case by case.
Where does the green waste go?
To the Gard rhodanien facility, not a Vaucluse one. Access is reserved for residents of that authority: it is a scheduling constraint before it is a cost.
And at the foot of the bridge?
The old bridge opens onto quays and narrow streets. Parking the lorry and rotating the skips is planned in advance — improvising on market day costs half a day.

What moves a quote in Pont-Saint-Esprit
No price is given without seeing the ground. What can be said is what, here specifically, pushes it up or down.
The bridge sets the journey, not the distance
Pont-Saint-Esprit is among the closest towns to Lapalud as the crow flies, but the Rhône crossing is the only way over. That is what determines the drive, and so the travel share of the quote — noticeably steady, whatever the hour.
In the old centre, it is the carrying that costs
