What it involves
Pruning is not cutting at random. It is removing what needs removing, where it needs removing, so the tree stays stable, regrows properly and stops causing a problem. Depending on the case, that means reducing the crown so it clears a roof, thinning it to let light through, taking out deadwood that threatens to fall, or fully dismantling a tree that has grown too close to a building.
On a tall or awkwardly placed tree, the work is done by sectional dismantling: Josué climbs, cuts in sections and lowers each piece on a rope. Nothing free-falls over a car, a conservatory or a fence.
A bad cut cannot be undone. It leaves a wound that never closes, triggers weak regrowth and leaves the tree fragile for years. That is why the cuts are decided before anyone climbs.

When to do it
The best window runs from autumn to late winter, outside frost: the sap has dropped and the tree copes far better with cutting. Safety work — a split limb, a tree leaning after a mistral — is of course done whenever it is needed. Heavy pruning during a heatwave is avoided.
While we are there, this often comes up
- felling and stump removal — when the tree is dead, too close to a building, or beyond saving.
- bringing back a hedge that has grown too tall — a six-metre cypress hedge is a reduction job, not a trim.
- lifting low branches for statutory clearance — the legal obligation also means thinning crowns and raising branches.
Tree pruning: the mistakes we see most
Three situations that come back job after job. None is beyond repair, but all cost more to fix than to avoid.
Topping a tree to bring it down
Cutting the trunk off at half height does not reduce a tree: it triggers a crown of water shoots that grow twice as fast, attach poorly to the remaining wood and snap in the first mistral. Three years on, the tree is taller than it was and more dangerous. Reduction is done limb by limb, cutting back to a drawing branch — a side branch able to take over.
Pruning in spring “because the weather is nice”
By April the sap has risen and the tree has emptied its reserves into new leaf. Cutting then takes twice from it: the wood and the reserve. It regrows badly, seals badly, and becomes vulnerable to fungal decay. Barring a safety emergency, pruning runs from autumn to late winter, outside frost.
Cutting flush with the trunk
A flush cut removes the branch collar — the ring of wood through which a tree closes its own wound. Without it the wound stays open for years and becomes a way in for rot. The cut goes just outside the collar, and the collar does the rest.
What it costs
The height of the tree, its species, its health, how easily equipment can reach it, what stands around it (house, power line, swimming pool) and the volume of branches to take away. Two trees of the same size can be quoted very differently depending on whether a vehicle can get close or everything has to be carried out by hand.
How it is priced
Per tree, not per hour: the tree decides how long the work takes, not the other way round. On a job with several trees, the quote lists them one by one — you can see what each costs, and you can take one out.
What the market charges
National comparison sites put pruning a single tree between around a hundred euros for a low, accessible one and several hundred for a large tree in a tight spot. The gap between their own published ranges is wide, which says a good deal about what a figure is worth before anyone has seen the tree.
These figures are taken from national comparison sites. They are not PJ Espaces Verts’ rates: Josué prices after seeing the job, and his quote may fall outside these ranges either way. They are here so you are not calling in the dark.
What a quote is made of
- Height and species
- A four-metre fruit tree and a fifteen-metre plane need neither the same kit nor the same time. Species matters as much: a poplar comes apart quickly, an oak far more slowly.
- The technique the site imposes
- From the ground, on a pole, or climbing with sections lowered on a rope. The third is the slowest — and the only one possible between a roof and a pool.
- Access
- A vehicle that reaches the foot of the tree and an eighty-centimetre gate are not the same job. It is the item that most often separates two quotes for trees of identical height.
- The volume of timber to move
- Chipped on site, taken to the tip, or cut and stacked at yours if you keep it. The three do not cost the same.
- Protecting what is around
- Sheeting, taking down a fence, moving a vehicle, protecting a conservatory: time before anything starts, and it is priced.
No price is given before the tree has been seen: a four-metre fruit tree in an open field and a fifteen-metre plane tree wedged between a house and a pool are not the same job. Josué comes out, looks, and leaves you a written, itemised quote — free, with no obligation.
The 50% tax credit: what to know
Small gardening jobs at a private home fall under France’s personal services scheme: half the cost comes back to the householder as a tax credit, up to an annual ceiling per household, and an immediate-advance option means paying only half the invoice at the time. The catch is that the work has to fall inside that category — and many websites claim it for work that does not.
This service only partly qualifies, and it is a point almost nobody spells out. Pruning at head height, done from the ground without climbing equipment, counts as small gardening. As soon as ropes, a harness or a platform are involved, the work falls outside the scheme: it is forestry work, and the tax credit does not apply.
The tax credit requires a business registered under the personal services scheme. Ask Josué where that registration stands when he quotes: it changes what the work finally costs you, and he will tell you straight.
Tree pruning: your questions
Does a tree need pruning every year?
No, and it is actually counterproductive. A healthy tree is pruned every three to five years depending on species and growth rate. Pruning too often, or too hard, weakens it and pushes out water shoots — those fast, vertical, brittle stems that break easily and force you to come back sooner.
My tree is touching the power line, can you deal with it?
Not directly. Branches in contact with the network are the responsibility of the grid operator. Josué tells you who to contact, and works on the rest of the tree once the situation has been made safe.
Can pruning kill my tree?
Badly done pruning can, yes. An over-severe reduction, blind cuts or work at the wrong time of year weaken a tree lastingly. The aim is always to remove as little as possible for the result you want.
