Getting to Bollène from Lapalud
Ten minutes from Lapalud on the D994, through nothing but vines. It is the nearest and the most built-up town in the area, which matters for small jobs: a round trip fits inside half a day. Twenty metres of hedge that would not be worth the journey thirty kilometres out slots in here without difficulty.
The gardens here, and what they involve
Two very different Bollènes on the same ground. The estates on the edge of town, built between the 1970s and the 1990s, with cypress and laurel hedges planted along the boundary and left to climb for decades — half the enquiries from this area. And the old centre, where plane trees planted long before the houses now around them need regular reduction, in tight conditions, between façades and overhead lines.
Statutory clearance: what applies here
Bollène falls inside the wildfire risk prevention plan for the Uchaux massif. It is the point most owners are unaware of, and it has direct consequences: in the areas covered, clearing 50 metres around buildings and 3 metres either side of private access roads is not a maintenance suggestion but an enforceable obligation. The town hall will confirm how your plot is classified in a few minutes.

The dominant species, and what they demand
Leyland cypress and cherry laurel dominate the estate hedges, and they are the two species least forgiving of a late rescue: neither regrows from bare wood, which rules out cutting into the stripped section. Plane trees hold the town centre and are worked from November to March, during dormancy. On the outlying plots, holm oak, Aleppo pine and black locust regrowth come back fast as soon as ground stops being kept.
Bollène district by district: what changes from one quarter to the next
Fourteen thousand people spread across a medieval centre, engineers’ estates from the fifties, a garrigue hill and a clay plain. One text cannot serve all four.
Below the Collégiale Saint-Martin
Medieval lanes, closed courtyards, town houses. Neither lorry nor platform gets in: the tree comes apart on ropes and the timber is carried out by hand to the boulevards on the old ramparts. This is where job time doubles.
The banks of the Lez
Riverside woodland overlooks the public garden and the fitness trail. Poplar, willow and ash at the water’s edge: soft wood, shallow rooting, and nesting seasons to respect before any work.
Bollène-Écluse and Saint-Pierre
The estates built for the canal works at the turn of the fifties. The hedges and conifers planted then are seventy years old: they now tower over light roofs they were never meant to reach.
The Barry hill
Garrigue, holm oak and pine on sandstone, sloping ground. This is the part of Bollène where the clearance obligation arises most often, and where burning cuttings is most tightly controlled.
The clay plain
Thick clays, prone to shrink and swell. A tree planted too close to a house here poses a problem pruning does not always solve: it is the one area where the choice between reducing and felling turns on the ground as much as on the tree.
Towards La Croisière
Cypress hedges planted as windbreaks against the mistral of the Rhône corridor. They have a job to do, so they are not cut back hard: they are coppiced in sections before they thin out at the base.

Do you work on the plane trees in the old centre?
Yes, for private owners. A plane tree in the old centre is reduced by sectional dismantling, pieces lowered on a rope, with façades and vehicles protected — the kind of job where access weighs more than height in the quote. Street trees on public land, on the other hand, are the council’s responsibility, not yours.
